Botanical Gardens and Colonialism : Beate Spitzmüller

The expansion of European powers in the 19th century led to the establishment of botanical gardens around the world, which served as symbols of power and the exploration of foreign flora, as well as the exploitation and dissemination of plant species in the colonies. These botanic gardens formed a network of plant exchange and knowledge between colonial powers and contributed to the rooting and spreading of empires.
