Saruya Air

As part of my residency in Japan, I have been developing new approaches to my conceptual drawing practice.

During my stay, I explored new forms and materials and continued to develop my drawings. The work is expanding beyond the picture plane and into space. Alongside works on paper, I have been working with textiles, creating drawings on fabric as well as new, independent textile objects.

I am interested in how drawing changes when it moves beyond its familiar surface and becomes part of the material itself. Lines, fabric, folds and volume come together to create works that move between drawing and object.

On September 18, I presented the works created during my residency as part of an Open Studio and Artist Talk. I shared insights into the process of developing the new body of work and the ideas that have shaped it.The experiences and experiments in Japan are becoming part of my ongoing artistic practice and will continue to influence my work beyond the residency.

SARUYA ARTIST IN RESIDENCE (SARUYA AIR) is an artist residency located in Fujiyoshida, Japan, a city known for its traditional textile industry and the diverse ecosystems nurtured by the forests of Mt. Fuji. We offer a space where artists inspired by this unique environment can focus on their work and deepen their ideas.
